Appreciating the Rain

We all know it never rains in Southern California, but when it rains…

I grew up in Florida where it rained. A lot. But the sun almost always came out at some point, sometimes during the actual rainstorm. I remember as a kid that they used to give out the St Pete Times for free if the sun didn’t come out atleast once during the day. Not sure they still do that, but it sure showed faith in that Florida weather!

I sometimes miss thunderstorms. You rarely get them in So Cal. I remember reading about a woman who lived in Georgia who had been hit by lightening three times and survived. She just seemed to be a magnet for lightening. One time she was just doing her laundry – zap! Came right through the electrical wires and got her.  Her decision after three times was to move to California – not much lightening here!

Her story is rather amusing – the fact she survived the first one, you would think she’d avoid any electrical equipment during a thunderstorm, but no. Guess she believed that her odds of getting hit by lightening more than once in her life were pretty low.  Second time, though, maybe that would be scare her off. Not quite. Third time was the charm.  At that point, she recognized she was just going to keep getting hit by lightening unless she got out of harm’s way.  For her, that meant leaving a place that had a lot of lightening and going far, far away.

Heavy-handed metaphor, but you get the idea.
