How Far Can an Addict Go?
Humans have a tendency to underestimate risk where it’s high and overestimate it where it is very low. Examples? We fear planes that cause a small number of deaths and don’t think twice about jumping in our car, which is one of the leading causes of death. When we were drinking, some of us underestimated how bad we were. For a long time.
I keep thinking about the fact that Michael Jackson was using Propofol. I mean, an anaesthetic? It just seems like the most striking example of how far someone will go if they have become addicted to drugs and have lost the ability to sleep even. Sleep is such a a basic need and so utterly biologically necessary that you know you are in trouble when you can’t do it.
I hate to think of what my projectory would have been if I hadn’t been fortunate enough to get help early on. Sometimes it’s good to think – how bad could it have gotten if all the events hadn’t intervened that propelled me to get into recovery?
Sort of like the economy. Maybe it doesn’t look so great yet – but how bad could it have gotten without some sort of aggressive intervention? Frankly, I just don’t want to know.

As an addiction specialist,I have treated addicts since 1987. I have seen many go just as far as Michael Jackson did. Unfortunately, this is all to common.
Like you, I feel fortunate to have received help before the ultimate bottom (death). I hope that the work we are all doing to bring information to addicts and their families via the internet will save some lives.
I pose the question to you and anyone who reads this…When is enough enough? What is the final wake up call before it is too late?
