Have Some Fun

Not too long ago I was with a group at a restaurant – we had a private party room. The group was dry (even the normies did not order alcohol) – a good portion of them had long-term sobriety.  Everyone had a blast – laughing, talking, having loads of fun. Good food, good friends, and good conversation.

At some point one of the servers said he had never seen a group have so much fun without alcohol – he was clearly surprised by the jovial atmosphere.   It made a lot of us laugh. We know life is darn good when you are a sober alcoholic. There is a lot to celebrate.

It’s important to have fun in sobriety.  There is no point in moaning and groaning that there’s no point in partying if you don’t have alcohol or drugs.  Frankly, the best times I’ve had IN MY LIFE have been sober times – by a long shot – even when there are others around who are imbibing, I generally see myself as having a better time.

Why?

Because I’m experiencing the event in its purest form: me, friends, and life.  I am me. They are them. This is life.

Now there are times where I’m at events where I’m rolling my eyes at the lushes who are making idiots of themselves. I’m grateful it’s not me doing that, and I’m thinking: tomorrow I’ll wake up and remember everything, and I won’t feel like crap all day!

There is a certain rush of energy and joy when you are celebrating sans the mood-altering substances. It’s a feeling you simply cannot have been wasted.
