Do You Suffer from Perpetual Discontent?

It’s a malady, that’s for sure. Maybe you don’t have it, but you know someone who does. It’s this state of being where a person is always discontented.  There is always something. It’s really a pretty unhappy way to live, and I think many times it is just a bad habit.  I know my first [...]

When We Drank, Bad Things Happened

I’ve said this before, you know you need help with your alcohol use if when you drink, bad things happen.  It’s so much simpler than asking yourself what I call “denial questions” – do I drink in the morning? no. Does that mean I’m not really an alcoholic?  Argggh! What a great way to make [...]

Simplify Your Life? Easier Said than Done!

If you are anything like me the phrase Keep It Simple Silly/Stupid irritated the heck out of you.  What does that mean?  Life is complicated! For goodness sake, tell me how and I’ll do it!
Like most things that came my way, I complicated the issue – I couldn’t even keep “keep it simple” simple. I [...]

Rarely Have We Seen a Person Fail Who Has Throughly Followed Our Path

The most critical part of this declaration of sorts from “How It Works” are the last four words: thoroughly followed our path.  I want to focus on this idea, not to say that people don’t get sober and stay sober other ways, but that the early experiences with AA showed that if you DID follow [...]

What Was Your Bottom?

If there is one thing you quickly realize in recovery it’s not to compare – the addict who still wants to use or drink will look for the differences rather than the similarities between  her and other people in recovery.   Denial says, “Oh you weren’t as bad as they were. You probably were just a [...]

Is Your Job Destroying Your Spirit?

Everyone says these days, “Be glad you have a job.”  But that doesn’t help the person who is downright miserable. Maybe you have an abusive boss or you feel like your spirit is dying in a job you hate. The thing to do is make a plan. Start thinking about what job you would like [...]

How Do You Deal with AA Dogmatists?

It’s a provocative issue. I’m talking about the ones who say my way or the highway and conveniently forget the words in the Big Book such as “suggested.” I think the people at most risk are newcomers who are so turned off by hard-core dogma that they might not come back.
